I don't know why some people feel they have to answer questions they obviously know nothing about. Sad how they end up sticking their foot in their mouth.
A DVR is known as a Digital Video Recorder. It digitally records audio and or video on a hard-drive for later review. There are consumer entertainment versions and there This are also versions used in the security industry for video surveillance. Now enough of that and onto the question.
What you are really looking for is a comparison between embedded systems and PC Based. Embedded being the standalone type box vs software and a video card on a PC.
In my experience, I have found PC based to be a little more problematic. Although in theory both operate with a microprocessor, the problem arises with the reliance on Billyware (AKA Windows). Also Standalone units tend to be designed for one purpose and are far more efficient at that purpose at a lower cost. PC Processors are multi-purpose and therefor need more power to do what you want.
Back to the operating system. I have found Linux versions to be more stable and crash resistance over their Billyware counterparts. As for brands, try to stay away from offshore knock-offs. I know pretty much everything comes from there, but there are some differences. Things to look for are compression rate, image degregation after compression, frame rate, harddrive size, hardrive warranty, ease of the GUI etc. I have been using Capture units and they tend to be fairly stable, the GUI is nice and adaptable, and the Hardrive comes with a 3 year warranty (Very important as it runs constantly)
