security camera installation companies

How did the British populus agree to the installation of CCTV across the UK?
OK, I confess. I love watching British detective mysteries...Morse, Lewis, Lynley, etc. It seems that in solving every crime, the police have access to CCTV footage from virtually any angle in all locations. It seems like a constant monitoring of the British public.
So, not to let my education be driven solely by television, I am hoping some AVers--maybe even some UK AVers--can help me understand how the government was able to get away with such a widespread invasion of British privacy?
I cannot see a similar national security program succeeding in installing security cameras throughout the US, or even throughout one city here. I didn't think our laws were that different. Private companies will use CCTV for their security. But, nationally, the US people would rise up against such an invasion of privacy. Granted, today, if the government felt it needed to spy on us, it probably has far more sophisticated satellite and drone technologies to deploy without our even knowing...
...like the proverbial British invasion. I suspect that the incidents that they have had through the years including with Northern Ireland issues, they have become more concerned about safety.
And I really dont think any country rises up so much over 'rights' as we do.
