How can you get a smaller voltage from a DC power supply?
I want to use the low-voltage-lamp power supply (12 v) already existing in my ceiling to power a security camera, which needs 9 volts. How can I re-use this existing 12 volts DC power source for that purpose (assuming it is used only for the camera)? What sort of electronic component can I hook it up to before connecting to the camera?
Multiple suggestions are welcome.
You could use a potentiometer which effectively intoduces a resistance into the circuit and which thus reduced the voltage. However, you may not like the idea of introducing a heat generating resistance into your ceiling. But is it not the case that the transformer you referred to is only powered up when the light switch is ON.
I think I would prefer to wire up the camera using its own 9 Volt transformer the power to which is controlled from something/somewhere other than the light switch.
Unless of course the lights are always powered up from the switch but the bulb is finally controlled by a motion senser but which powers the camera day (lights not needed) and night (lights needed if camera is not infra red).
