Dvr Security Cameras
I need to secure my boat with security cameras because some1 is breaking in while its in the boat yard.?
The boat sits in the boat yard throughout most of the winter and some of the summer. Being from chicago, I need a security system that operates at cold temps. I would also like to receive some sort of alert when some1 breaks into the boat (email, text). I think a 12v DVR and cameras are my best bet and want it to operate on less than 20 watts. Does anyone know a low cost way to do this??

There are some security cameras that run off 5V, and have Ethernet and USB ports on them. I got one last year, that allows one to put in a USB drive for recording, and it has a motion detect feature that records video on movement. I used an alternative of using a wireless USB adapter, and sent the files wireless to my FTP/Web server (in the same house)
The camera I got was a cheap $99 one, the video is not the best, but it did work. It was called a IP-320E (Chinese brand) from www.micon.com
Not to say that will do it for you, but it also has a built in SMTP mail server for the motion detect I believe. There are other brands like this out there, costing more, but may be more reliable.
You could run a converter for the 12V to bring it down to 5V, or some cameras may run on 12V, depending on brand. Power usage is around 6-7W I figure for my setup.
Your issue will be how to email you - you need some form of wireless access, that you can send mail out through. To connect to the camera from remote, you have to port forward certain ports on the router you are connected to - there's lots of networking issue to answer, try to get some help...
