Solar panels for security cameras?
Hello, i recently got this. http://www.chinavasion.com/wired-cctv-cameras/ip-camera-server/ and i am trying to get it to work on solar power They are outdoors and we dont feel like running a few hundred feet of power cables. Thanks and best answer will get 10 points.
Only danger in that is when the sun comes out, you may get more voltage then your camera needs. How many volts is required to run them, 3-4.5-6-9-12? Each camera will need a separate power supply if you don't want to work with cables. Each will need one panel, one battery, and one charge controller. To be honest it would be better to run conduit under ground to each camera and it would cost less for sure. If you want to go solar, as I said you would need for each, one panel, one charge controller, and one battery. Depending on the voltage they need you can also use small 12v cell phone chargers that plug into a cigarette lighter requiring 12v to reduce your voltage to 3v 4.5v 6v 9v 12v. I use them to run my cordless phones in my home that are also hooked up to my solar panels and batteries. What are you using for solar panels, and how many volts, and watts are they pushing? This also will make a difference as well.

You wouldn't need top of the line charge controllers for the small amount of watts you are using.

A small solar panel should be enough to do the job for each camera. They also have small panels with only a few watts for charging small batteries if thats what you want. Make sure they have enough watts to charge your battery

Each battery will will need to be enclosed in a box from the weather to preserve it as well as the charge controllers.
All this work can be done with success, but will be costly if that's what you want, and want it done right. You have no short cuts around this unless you want to damage your cameras?
I still say it would be much easier to run conduit under ground for your power supply to each camera, and it would cost less money and time.
