I got searched by security at the co-op for something i hadnt stolen?
Basically I picked up a club card leaflet and walked on while folding it and putting it in my bag. And someone reported me because they thought I was shop lifting.
I then had a security guy search me in the store and he found a packet of malteasers that I earlier bought in Tesco but didn't keep the receipt. I then got taken to the cctv room as he thought I stolen then. After about 20 mins of watching cctv footage I was let go and no other action wad taken.
I feel absolutely humiliated , and don't feel as if I can go back there.
I actually hate myself for not keeping the receipt on the malteasets and for walking into the stupid co- op.
I just feel absolutely horrified and everyone working there was giving me really doggey looks.
Not only that but people I know saw me having my bag searched, etc.
Security guards have a right to search anyone if they suspect them of theft and their suspicion has reasonable grounds. In this case it would seem that they did have reasonable grounds - you were seen putting something into your bag and then goods you couldn't provide a receipt for were found in your possession. I'm sure you feel humiliated but there's nothing you can do about it, the security guard was just doing his job. Mind you it's also worth bearing in mind that a security guard cannot search you on suspicion of theft unless you leave the shop because while you are still inside the building you haven't actually removed any unpaid for goods from the store. If you were stopped inside the shop and searched then you can complain to the shop about their procedure but legally they didn't do anything wrong really.
